Waves and Smiles celebra la navidad con niños en riesgo social de la zona caribeña

Waves and Smiles celebrates Christmas with children at social risk in the Caribbean region

Mickey Thompson presents the news story of the day.

Waves and Smiles graduates its first generation of children in its social support project with its Surf Therapy program.

After a year of intense work with the new generations of the Caribbean area, the Waves and Smiles Costa Rica project celebrated its first anniversary of social work in our national territory.

The program held a Christmas dinner to reward the winners of a recreational tournament that was held to raise funds to buy 120 pairs of leggings for the children and coaches of the project.

Waves and Smiles has been in operation for a year, however, the Christmas activities with the young people of the area are in their second year of celebration.

“This is the second year we’ve done it, and this time the dinner was for 100 children from the community. It stems from the idea that many of these children don’t have a Christmas dinner, they don’t have a gathering or a space where they can be told how important they are and that we are here to support them through thick and thin,” said Mike Castro, a member and coach of the Limón project.

The event also served as a graduation ceremony for 48 children and young people from the annual Surf Therapy course. The participants met the attendance requirements and demonstrated positive changes in behavior, as well as respecting the project's values.

The 14 coaches who help and are committed to the project were also certified; these young people range from 13 to 17 years old and were given the Surf Therapy Coach level 1 designation.

All the children from the project, ranging from 6 to 18 years old, participated. In total, it was a dinner for 120 people, and they had the support of the great singer Mike Joseph, representative of Afro-Caribbean art and music, and the rapper Nesta, who delighted the children with his talent.

The dinner was held in the multipurpose hall of the community's Catholic church with the support of Father Hector.
