Portugal's National Maritime Authority confirmed the death of Márcio Freire in the powerful waves of this extreme European destination.

The wave season has arrived in Nazaré and surfers are visiting this destination known worldwide for its extreme waves.

This season, Praia do Norte has sadly recorded its first surfing fatality. Brazilian Márcio Freire, a world-renowned surfer known for riding massive waves, suffered a cardiac arrest after being swept away by one of Nazaré's powerful swells.

Freire, 47, was rescued by swimmers on jet skis, however, by the time he was brought to shore it was too late and the Brazilian's death was confirmed.

Nazaré has some of the world's largest waves. They are driven by a 5-kilometer-deep underwater canyon that ends where the North Atlantic meets the coast near the old fishing village.
