Young Costa Rican stars hope to give their best in a World Cup that will award two extra places for Paris 2024.
Tomorrow, the opening ceremony of a new edition of the ISA World Surfing Games 2022 will kick off at Huntington Beach, and Costa Rica has made its presence felt with a new team that hopes to demonstrate its potential and talent.
This 2022 World Cup will award 2 extra places to the countries that finish in the top overall places, meaning that the male and female countries that take first place will not only have 2 Olympic places for Paris 2024, but they will have 3 places, which will be defined by their respective Federations and National Olympic Committees.

This new process, led by national coach Diego Naranjo, focuses on results and hard, disciplined work, hoping to be reflected in a team full of talent and potential.
“This is a new process, it may be long and difficult, but there is no doubt that I will put forth my best effort to provide honest and disciplined work in pursuit of the best possible results,” Diego Naranjo told Surfing Republica.
The Tricolor team in this World Cup edition will be confirmed in the men's category by: Ă“scar Urbina, Malakai MartĂnez and Darshan Antequera, while in the women's category Erika Berra, Rachell AgĂĽero and Leilani McGonagle will be in charge of seeking praise for the country.
Athletes Lia DĂaz, Tosh Talbot and Tomás King will be substitutes.

According to a statement released by the Costa Rican Surfing Federation, this call-up was based on the current results of Costa Rican surfers in CT, Challenger, QS, and ALAS events. However, Brisa Hennessy and Carlos Muñoz are both recovering from injuries and will not be able to participate in this edition. Additionally, there are other athletes who have recently achieved positive results, but due to their previous lack of competitive activity, they were not included on the long lists previously submitted to the National Olympic Committee (CONCR) and therefore could not be considered immediately.
Leilani McGonagle, like several other female surfers who will be at the world championships, will also compete simultaneously in the Super Girl Surf Pro, a QS 3,000 pt stop that will be held at Oceanside Pier; however, the organization has already planned everything and the competitions will not clash.
Another noteworthy achievement for Costa Rican surfer Leilani McGonagle is her nomination by the International Surfing Association (ISA) to join the World Athletes Commission. The organization based its decision on various criteria, including her academic background and experience at ISA World Championships. Only eight surfers worldwide have had the privilege of being selected.
