Defay finished fifth and will not overtake Brisa Hennessy at the top of the table.
Costa Rican surfer Brisa Hennessy regained the women's world leadership after finishing in fifth position at the Margaret River Pro and combining some results.
Hennessy will wear yellow again for a CT event. Her combined results at the Margaret River Pro gave the Costa Rican the top spot in the rankings.
Brisa, after the early exits of Carissa Moore and Tyler Wight in the event, knew that all she needed was for her other threat to the top of the rankings, the Frenchwoman Johanne Defay, to surpass the Costa Rican's score only by winning the tournament at Margaret River. This situation did not occur, as Isabella Nichols overcame Defay and cleared the way for the national player who will now have a total of 28,185 points.
