Only once in the entire history of the world tour has there been a similar stoppage of dates to this year; however, at that time several events had already taken place, whereas in 2020 the dates have not yet started and we are only two months away from the middle of the year.

Using technology and communication tools, surfer Mick Fanning spoke via video conference with respected World Surf League (WSL) commentator Ronnie Blakey, who commented that there might not be a 2020 CT champion.

Blakey, who we have seen repeatedly implementing successful new ideas in surf journalism, has mentioned to the three-time world champion that there may not be a CT world champion in 2020.

“ I think you can confirm that there won’t be a world champion in 2020,” the commentator mentioned during the conversation. Ronnie added that he believes the reaction from surfers if they were to continue with the schedule, visiting different locations around the world, would be negative from some.

Fanning, on the other hand, confirms this comment, however he mentions that if seven world stops are held a champion could be defined and also gives an option in case the calendar only allows for 6 events.

Regarding the QS rankings, where some Costa Rican players are vying for a spot on the 2021 Dream Tour, uncertainty is palpable. This is because the WSL has canceled all events until May, and considering the current situation in different parts of the world, the return of activities is still pending.
