Surfing Costa Rica - Giant swell hits Hawaii Island and generates epic waves

Some big wave surfers haven't missed the opportunity to enjoy the swell and get some epic photographic material.

Days ago, it was eagerly announced that a swell would bring large waves to the north Hawaiian coast; however, the size of its waves has been enormous, and last Saturday was almost like something out of a horror movie, even leading to beach closures to prevent accidents.

Spots like Waimea Bay, Outer Reef, Jaws, among others, known worldwide for their size when a swell hits the island, became gigantic, almost impossible to surf.

The size of the waves has been so impressive that even the Hawaiian media have dubbed Saturday "The Big Saturday," and the headlines of the editions have confirmed that these have been the biggest waves in recent years.

Rescues have been frequent, and emergency crews have had to work harder than usual to rescue more than 80 people, from fishermen to surfers, on Oahu alone. In addition, more than 5,170 preventative actions were recorded.

The swells in some areas reached sizes of up to 20 meters, a measurement not seen on the island for a long time. So much so, that the Outer Reef, renowned in the surfing world for withstanding swells of virtually any size, couldn't withstand it last Saturday and had to be closed.

“The masses of water that rose up this weekend were gigantic; we hadn’t seen anything like it for many years. Many of us knew that big waves were coming, but that size was incredible,” said Kamea Iapo, a local fisherman.

Videos and photos of this swell keep pouring in, and big wave riders have taken advantage of these conditions to create a feast of epic footage, along with the occasional wipeout that will also be recorded.
