Surfing Costa Rica - Surfeadores Unidos por Costa Rica llevan ayuda por segunda vez a Isla Chira

Surfing Costa Rica - Surfers United for Costa Rica bring aid to Isla Chira for the second time

Isla Chira receives second phase of social aid from Surfers United for Costa Rica.

In a second delivery of social aid, Isla Chira received support this weekend through food supplies from Surfers United for Costa Rica.

The delivery of this second phase of social support was carried out in conjunction with the Public Force and some other entities that collaborated with the renowned Costa Rican surfer Lisbeth Vindas and the SUP competitor and doctor of dentistry Selene Cubero, in addition to the entire staff of Surfers United for Costa Rica to provide the delivery to 70 island families.

“In this second phase, the goal of Surfers United for Costa Rica was to reach families that had not yet been reached by any institution or group, as we have been working to ensure that the supplies are being delivered properly. Therefore, the families who received assistance were being monitored in coordination with the Public Force of Isla Chira. Something worth noting is that after the first delivery to Isla Chira, thanks to media support, other companies and institutions, as well as private individuals, have made donations. This is very positive, as one of the objectives was to raise awareness of the area's difficulties. Furthermore, this second visit allowed us to achieve another objective: delivering supplies to the families in critical condition identified during the first visit,” stated Wagner Rojas, a member and driving force behind Surfers United for Costa Rica.

This second visit was also focused on people with disabilities. According to Wagner, a study was conducted beforehand so that, in collaboration with Nathalia Vindas of Adapted Surfing, the National Council for the Integration of People with Disabilities (CONAPI) could provide food supplies to families with members with disabilities and conduct brief interviews to observe the condition of the disabled people in order to provide any other type of support needed.

“It was a transformative experience because we realized the basic needs of some households, where there wasn't even a bag of rice, for example. We also saw the reality of more than 20 children with disabilities on the island, diagnosed with everything from cerebral palsy to autism. Seeing the reality of this population was a powerful experience. They not only gave us their best smiles and their gratitude for what we were doing, but we were also incredibly motivated to go back with many solutions, to collaborate and offer solidarity. It's precisely during the three-month fishing ban that most of the inhabitants have no income, since they are dedicated to artisanal fishing,” Cubero stated.

This second visit was an opportunity to hold a "Baby Shower" for a member of the community in critical condition, and the activity was carried out in order to bring her some gifts.

It is important to clarify that initially a visit to Isla Venado was also planned; however, the Public Force of said island unfortunately did not provide the information of the families in need, a request that was made well in advance.

Surfers United for Costa Rica is preparing a third phase, to be announced in the coming days, which will focus on providing professional assistance such as doctors, dentists, psychologists, therapists, veterinarians, and others. Anyone interested is welcome to join the cause.
