Surfing Costa Rica - Seven of the coldest places to surf in the world



If you don't like the cold, you'll think twice about visiting them as a surfing destination.

Normally, when we talk about surfing, we talk about sun, beach, or simply people enjoying the surroundings. And although some places are a bit colder than others depending on the time of year, good clothing like a jacket and a good wetsuit will help us enjoy the waves.

However, can you imagine surfing in places where temperatures hover around negative numbers in Celsius? You'd really think twice before entering those waters.



Many people might think this way, however, adventurers and lovers of extreme conditions want the conditions to align so they can enjoy its cold but exciting waves.


In this article we present a list of seven really cold places where, depending on the time of year, surfing is a sport that can be enjoyed.

1- Iceland : a wonderful and unparalleled destination in beauty. Surfers from all over the world sometimes visit this European country to surf in practically frozen waters. Today, temperatures range between 6.8°C and 0.7°C, however, in colder seasons, these figures can be much lower.

2- Lake Ontario, Canada: This place isn't particularly known for its waves; however, this year some surf enthusiasts decided to test their skills against the lake's chilly waters. Today, temperatures in Canada range from 0.5°C to 3.5°C, and they can be even colder depending on the time of year.

 


3- Antarctica : Some internationally renowned surfers have braved its waves and temperatures. It's a place where ice, cold water, and penguins are commonplace. Today's temperatures in this extreme destination range from -0.2 °C to -0.9°C, and they can be even colder depending on the time of year.

4- Aleutian Islands, Alaska : a destination few would consider for surfing due to its difficult access. Its cold waters are a real challenge for those who dare to try surfing its waves. Today, temperatures range from 5.8°C to -1.8°C, and they could be even colder depending on the time of year.



5- Norwegian Arctic : a spot that would thrill anyone with its incredible landscapes where ice abounds. Some extreme surfing films have been shot here, and European surf enthusiasts travel at certain times of the year to enjoy the experience. Today's temperatures range from 3.4°C to -1.8°C, however, frosts can be even lower, depending on the time of year.

 


6- The Alps : this place is not known for its waves, however, the upcoming opening of an artificial wave park will undoubtedly catapult it as one of those extreme spots around the world.


7- Canadian east coast and northern New England : in this place the phenomenon of ice waves sometimes occurs and as its name indicates, the
sea waves arrive practically frozen to the coast.

If you love adventure and challenges, surfing these conditions would undoubtedly be a memory you would keep in your mind forever.
