The President of the International Olympic Committee highlighted that it is being demonstrated that it is possible to hold large sporting events safely.

A topic that has literally turned the Olympic world upside down is the holding of the Tokyo 2020 games. Some claim that it will be possible, others recommend the cancellation of the games; however, both decisions affect many people and the tension is growing more and more.

Last week, another episode of this issue occurred in the host country, all with the statements of the new prime minister, Mr. Yoshihide Suga, who showed that he was determined to bring the games to Japanese soil.

It should be remembered that the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic globally caused the postponement of the Games, rescheduling them for 2021 on the same dates that had been agreed for this year; however, the continuous peaks of infection throughout the world continue to generate uncertainty about whether it will be possible to hold the event.

The current president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, mentioned a few days ago that despite the lack of a vaccine against COVID-19, large sporting events can still be held, and stated that canceling the Olympics could have major political and economic consequences.

On the health front , the president of the Japan Medical Association, Yoshitake Yokokura, confirmed that they maintain their position: “If the dates for the games arrive and there is no effective vaccine against the virus, it will be extremely difficult to hold the next Olympic Games in 2021.”

What has also set those interested in the issue scrambling is the position of the president of Tokyo 2020, Yoshiro Mori, who also assured that if the Games are not held in 2021, they would be completely canceled; in other words, there will no longer be any possibility of a further delay.

Viewpoints vary widely, and the fight to hold the games is on the table, awaiting a positive agreement for the fields of health and sport.

The 2020 Olympics bring a very special element to the discipline of surfing, as they would go down in history as the first games to have this sport included in the Olympic program.
