High-ranking officials of the International Olympic Committee do not rule out the definitive cancellation of the games.
Although the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were moved to exactly one year after the initially agreed date, a few days ago a concern was mentioned about the lack of control of the COVID-19 virus in the world that could lead to the definitive cancellation of the games.
Due to the current situation, Haruyuki Takahashi, a member of the Tokyo 2020 Executive Committee, told a Japanese media outlet that if the situation is not completely under control, the games should be rescheduled once again.
However, Pierre-Olivier Beckers, a high-ranking official of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and president of the Coordination Commission for the 2024 Games, mentioned a few days ago that if the Games are not held in 2021, they should be cancelled.
“Today, everyone is convinced that the Tokyo Games will begin on July 23, 2021. Just as we are convinced that if they don't take place in 2021, they won't happen at all. Furthermore, it is essential to resume the normal sporting calendar in order to allow major events to find their place again. All sports federations had to adapt to the postponement of the Games. Such a disruption cannot be allowed to happen a second time,” Beckers told a French media outlet.
Another possibility that emerged was to organize the games without an audience, a proposal that was rejected.
The final decision will be made before spring 2021; however, the uncertainty is growing daily for brands, athletes, and many other areas involved.
If the games are cancelled, surfing will have to wait four more years to be included in the Olympic program.
