In an edition that will see surfing debut as an Olympic discipline, fans of this and other non-Japanese sports will have to wait to see their idols in person.
This news was announced by Japanese authorities to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), following a virtual meeting where the problems facing the Asian country and the entire world with COVID-19 were discussed.

“In many ways, the Tokyo 2020 Games will be completely different from any previous edition of the Games. However, the essence of the Games will remain intact, with athletes giving their all and inspiring the world with their extraordinary performances. Right now, we are working on specific plans to share support from around the world remotely and to bring people together in a way that is appropriate to our times. Even if you can no longer travel to Japan this summer, we hope you will continue to support the Tokyo 2020 Games,” said Seiko Hashimoto, President of the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee.

The announcement is made 125 days in advance so that foreigners who were planning to travel for the games can refrain from doing so.
In addition, athletes and people involved in the organization of the games must comply with a strict health protocol in order to ensure the safe success of the games.
The opening ceremony of the Olympics is scheduled for Friday, July 25 at 4 a.m., Costa Rica time.
