The 2020 National Surf Circuit could reactivate competitions and crown national champions.
A few days ago, the question arose as to what would happen to the 2020 National Surf Circuit, due to the Ministry of Health's statement regarding the rescheduling of events with a massive presence of people and that also promote travel from various parts within and outside the country .
The Costa Rican Surf Federation at that time responded to us, stating that they would be in communication with the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Health in search of a correct application of the protocol that they had previously presented for the return of surfing to the national coasts after the reopening of beaches.
Today the Federation issued a statement on the matter, and its communiqué highlights the following:
“ According to the most recent version of the document “Temporary administrative measures for the handling of mass gathering activities” from the Ministry of Health, published on Saturday, August 1, the Costa Rican Tourism Institute will be responsible for approving the protocols with each municipality.
With this possibility, the Scotiabank National Circuit could continue in the high-performance categories, while also continuing the pre-selection process with a view to the ISA World Championship in El Salvador, which was announced a few days ago to take place from May 8 to 16, 2021.”
The Minister of Sport also spoke favorably about the issue:
“We want to continue moving forward gradually, responsibly, and carefully, to build a future of hope in the present. We are working with the Costa Rican Surfing Federation to activate high-level competitions in controlled spaces, without crowds and without public access, with the goal of beginning the process of supporting our athletes and their competitive level.”
If the Circuit is reactivated, as its president Randall Chaves indicated, it would begin with small events between September and October, fully respecting health protocols and local regulations.
Talks will continue, but there is a high probability that national competitions will return in 2020.
