Surfing has unique characteristics and will depend on special protocols for the resumption of the discipline.

The Costa Rican Surfing Federation has issued a statement regarding the current situation with the new guidelines and protocols. The statement was released on their social media channels and reads as follows:

Dear surfing community of Costa Rica,

The Costa Rican Surfing Federation (FSC) has been in constant communication with the Ministry of Sport and Recreation (Midepor) since the first day of the nationwide beach closures.

Our sport has unique characteristics and for this very reason, its logistics are complex in times of crisis such as the one the country is going through at this moment, in which resources are limited and focused on the prevention and care of those affected by the pandemic.

The FSC has always proceeded following the guidelines established by the Ministry of Sport, our governing body, and the Ministry of Health, which have created the guidelines for the safety of the entire population in general.

At the same time, the FSC has presented various scenarios for the reopening of our playing field to the Midepor authorities, which includes examples and adaptations to our national reality of the actions that other countries such as Australia, Spain and Portugal have carried out.

The proposals have included a hygiene protocol, the use of beaches for sports practice, and the opening of beaches in a staggered and safe manner.

Today more than ever, we must demonstrate to the authorities the discipline that characterizes surfers, respecting the due process established by the authorities.

We are going through a unique moment in history, and the Federation will continue its work with the authorities in the hope of reaching a solution that can satisfy all parties involved, but always putting the health and safety of everyone first.
