The World Surf League announced changes to the competition format for next year's CT and QS stops.

With a total of three modifications for competitions in 2021 and a call to wait until June for events this year, this is how the World Surf League (WSL) updates its organizational situation due to the impact of the coronavirus.

The WSL waited until May to observe the behavior of the pandemic that affects millions of people globally, and when there was no significant change, it announced the extension of the waiting period until next June and from there observe the situation to make a new decision.

The World Surf League also announced three significant changes for competitions in 2021, which we will explain below:

The WSL is creating a Surf Off to determine a world champion in 2021: It will be held with a limited group of top-ranked athletes. A draw will be held to determine the brackets, and the competition will proceed through Surf Offs, eliminating athletes until only the final two remain. The winner will take all. This applies to both men and women.

- There will be a structural change in the 2021 season so that the Challenge Series takes place between the WCT season: Two separate seasons will be created, with the CT and the QS dates specifically with the Challenge Series so that a surfer who drops out of the CT doesn't have to spend a whole year competing in QS dates, where the aim is to minimize the impact and allow the surfer who drops out of the CT to focus only on Challenge dates and return to the tour the following year.

- More regional WSL events will be created as pathways to the Challenger series: This decision is made so that surfers don't have to spend thousands of dollars traveling around the world for random WQS events to qualify.

The World Surf League is aware that it must work hard on protocols to return to competitions, and as CEO Erick Logan indicated in the video, the WSL medical team is already working on these protocols, which will be quite complex since different specifications will be needed for each country where the events are held.
