Surfing Costa Rica - Study shows that CBD helps blood flow to the brain

University of England reveals study that demonstrates CBD's help to brain blood flow.

The most recent study by London's Global University, regarding the benefits of CBD to humans, demonstrated with solid evidence the ability of this compound to increase cerebral blood flow in brain regions that process memory, such as the hippocampus.

This finding is very important as it could help develop treatments for health problems that affect memory, such as Alzheimer's or post-traumatic stress disorder.

CBD is one of the 100 different cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, and its benefits for the body are becoming increasingly important.

Two years ago, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of CBD to reduce seizures in severe forms of epilepsy.

“There is evidence that CBD can help reduce the symptoms of psychosis and anxiety. There is some evidence to suggest that CBD may improve memory function. In addition, CBD changes the way the brain processes emotional memories, which could help explain its purported therapeutic effects on PTSD and other psychiatric disorders. However, the precise mechanisms underlying CBD’s effects on memory are unclear,” reported the lead author of the new study, Dr. Michael Bloomfield of the English university.

Recent research has found that some of the negative psychiatric conditions associated with cannabis use may be primarily due to THC, and CBD may potentially counteract those harmful effects.

This new research sought to measure the acute effects of CBD on cerebral blood flow in brain regions associated with memory processing. Measurements of baseline blood flow were the key metric studied, based on findings from previous research suggesting that increased resting hippocampal blood flow may be linked to improved memory performance.

How was the study conducted?

Fifteen healthy subjects were recruited and their brains were scanned after receiving either a placebo or a 600 mg CBD capsule. Cerebral blood flow was measured using a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique called arterial spin labeling.

The results revealed significant increases in hippocampal blood flow after a single dose of CBD. However, the study interestingly noted that similar increases in blood flow were not seen in other brain regions near the medial temporal lobe. Increased blood flow was also observed in the orbitofrontal cortex, a region known for decision-making.

Further testing of the cohort found that the single dose of CBD did not confer any improvement in memory task performance. Therefore, this research certainly does not conclude that CBD is an acute memory-enhancing compound. Instead, the study points to compelling new avenues of research investigating CBD's potential to help treat neurological conditions known to be linked to specific blood flow abnormalities in the brain region.
