Surfing Costa Rica - Military training is applied in surfing

XXL surfers apply military techniques to fight against powerful giant waves.
At first glance, the title might seem far-fetched or even excessive for a sport. However, the extreme conditions faced by surfers who love big waves have led them to use certain military techniques as a viable option for reaching peak performance in the water.
Former US military personnel Don Tran and Prime Hall in California have made available a training option for surfers who wish to improve their physical and mental capabilities when facing giant bodies of water.

This couple of ex-marines, with experience in special operations, currently provide their training to different athletes, in different sports branches, including surfing.
Â
Elite athletes adhere to a special military training program based on underwater exercise, in addition to various techniques such as apnea , meditation, and breathing exercises that make this training an excellent option for big wave surfers who constantly struggle with pressure, fear, and even panic.

Athletes such as Cole Hushmand, professional surfer and four-time U.S. Under-18 champion, as well as Izzi Gomez, five-time SUP world champion and big wave surfer, among others, have taken this option to complement their functional training and have achieved incredible results.

The main idea of the coaches is to put into practice techniques to stay calm and face the challenge of a surf session in extreme conditions.
