Surfing Costa Rica - Deputies approve second debate for the reactivation of bottom trawling in Costa Rica

The Legislative Assembly plenary approved in its second debate the bill that aims to reactivate the shrimp trawling fishing technique.

After several days of discussion, the final vote was held today to observe the result on the second debate to reactivate the shrimp trawling fishing technique.

The vote was accompanied by many negative comments from some deputies; however, when the vote was taken, the approval of the second debate was determined with 28 deputies in favor and 18 against.

With this approval, Incopesca will now have a period of one year to carry out the necessary scientific and technical studies to conclude that bottom trawling is environmentally sustainable and therefore extend licenses with a proper regulation.

Despite the fact that the Technical Services Department of the Legislative Assembly stated that the study carried out by Incopesca was not correct because it did not adhere to the criteria required by the Constitutional Chamber, the procedure continued and the approval was carried out.

Shrimp trawling, in any of its biological stages, will be prohibited within the country's estuaries, river mouths, reefs, national parks, as well as in any other area delimited by Incopesca through a resolution duly based on scientific, technical and socio-economic criteria.
