Surfing Costa Rica - Costa Rica achieves a record number of beaches with Blue Flag Ecological certification

The Blue Flag Ecological program achieved the highest number of beaches with this award ever reported in a calendar year.

Costa Rica currently has a total of 138 beaches around the country with this prestigious certification.

Recently, some beaches on the Papagayo Peninsula were added, such as Playa Blanca, Virador, Sombrero, Nacascolo and Prieta, thus increasing the number of award-winning places.

“Actively participating in the Blue Flag Ecological Program in the beach category and having obtained five awards allows us to focus our efforts on ensuring the proper management of water and energy resources and solid waste; as well as on the protection of the flora and fauna of the area,” said Manuel Ardón, Senior Director of Operations and Vice President of Peninsula Papagayo.

The Blue Flag Ecological Program 2020 obtained significant figures in the previous year and so far this year, with Guanacaste having the most additions with 74, followed by Puntarenas with 46 and LimĂłn closing with 18 beaches.
