The World Championships in El Salvador will feature the best athletes in the world and will determine the final Olympic spots for Tokyo 2020.

This week the athletes selected to represent our country were chosen, in perhaps the most important world championship in the history of surfing.

The World Surfing Games El Salvador 2021 will be full of the best athletes from each country in the world and our representation has taken the event with the seriousness it deserves, selecting the best surfers possible.

The global commitment will take place between May 29 and June 6 on two iconic beaches in El Salvador.

“The level is very high; all the best in the world will be there, plus the extra drive and motivation everyone will have at the event. Every heat is going to be a spectacle. The waves in El Salvador are very good; the potential is there,” said Leilani McGonagle.

Costa Rica already knows what it's like to win a world surfing championship, as it did in Nicaragua in 2015, in addition to obtaining several world championship medals in men's and women's categories. This time, with a team very similar to that of past editions but even more reinforced by the addition of new members and with greater experience, it will undoubtedly be a candidate to seek Olympic spots.

The Mexican national team held several strategic training sessions prior to the final selection, which was overseen by Australian coach Mick Horrocks. The team will consist of:

Costa Rica has the last chance to obtain three more places (1 female and 2 male), since Brisa Hennessy already has an Olympic quota, however, she must attend El Salvador to meet the qualification requirements.
