Surfing Costa Rica - Costa Rica leads global proposal to protect the land and oceans

The “One Planet Summit” served as the launch of the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People initiative .

In an initiative that seeks to safeguard 30% of the planet's marine and terrestrial ecosystems by 2030, our country, along with the United Kingdom and France, leads the list of 50 countries enrolled in this coalition.

The High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People is an initiative that was launched this past January 11th during the “One Planet Summit” held in Paris, France.

The fundamental objective of this global union of efforts is to halt the loss of species and protect at least 30% of ecosystems that are vital to human health and economic security, all by the year 2030.

This agreement will be formalized at the UN Biodiversity Summit (COP15), to be held in China in May of this year.

“Healing and restoring nature is a key step towards human well-being, creating millions of quality green and blue jobs and fulfilling the 2030 agenda, particularly as part of our sustainable recovery efforts,” said Andrea Meza Murillo, Minister of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica.

The initiative served to highlight the reality in which we live, where only 15% of the land and 7% of the oceans are protected. Scientists have shown that humans have destroyed or altered 66% of the planet's oceans and 75% of its land. This study demonstrates that at least a 30% change is needed by 2030; otherwise, the damage to the planet will be irreversible.
