Surfing Costa Rica - Garabito Canton will make a difference by extending the beach time restriction
The Government of the Republic issued a decree establishing that beaches may be open until 2:30 pm, to prevent COVID-19 infections.
However, conditions on the beaches of the Garabito canton will be different.
During a session held this Thursday, the City Council agreed to extend the hours until
6:00 pm and disregard what has been established by the Government.
Tobias Murillo, mayor of Garabito, said in an interview with CRHoy.com that several factors were taken into account to extend the hours at the 12 beaches in the canton.
“The question we asked ourselves is, what parameters were used to decide that 2:30 pm was the time to close the beaches? We found no difference between 2:30 pm and 6:00 pm. We believe that the beach is beneficial for many people because of its salinity; that helps people's health,” the Mayor stated.
Regarding the restrictions, Murillo said they are only being applied on the coasts, because in sectors such as
Crowds can be seen on Central Avenue.
“The economy here has been very difficult, and the serious problem is that we're not going to kill people with food.”
"We're going to starve her to death during the pandemic."
In Quepos, Garabito, and the central canton of Jacó, 95% of the activity is tourism, and right now unemployment is at 70%. Families are going hungry. What is this? Do they want to eliminate tourism from Costa Rica?” he said.
The official said that the opening of beaches until 6:30 pm would begin this Saturday.

Days ago, the Municipality of Garabito expressed its displeasure with the news of the restrictions in a press release and presented arguments for a possible change in hours. Nationally, the government is awaiting the resolution of the injunction filed by lawyer Walter Brenes with the Constitutional Court on this matter.
