SKATEPARK ECOLOGICO SE ESTRENA EN LIBERIA

ECOLOGICAL SKATEPARK OPENS IN LIBERIA

Residents of the White City will have space for skateboarding.

Last week, the first ecological Skatepark in the region was inaugurated in Liberia, Guanacaste.

This skate park is located within the Liberia Ecological Park and was planned as a small savanna for Liberia.

The space is public and will be managed by the Liberia Sports Committee.

We met with Gustavo Piñar, a member of the skatepark's committee, and here is the interview.

Where did the idea for the Skatepark come from?

Gustavo: The idea arose from the need for a suitable space in Liberia for skateboarding. Some young people formed an Extreme Sports Subcommittee and began looking for ways to make it happen in 2015.

Why is it called ecological?

Gustavo: The skatepark is located within Liberia Ecological Park, a government-protected area planned as a small savanna for Liberia. No trees could be cut down for the skatepark's construction, so its design was customized to fit the existing trees. The park also includes a soccer field and walking trails.

Why do you consider the creation of the venue to have been important?

Gustavo: It's important for many reasons, including:

A- It consolidates us as an organized group, SUBDEX, like this skatepark, is the result of a lot of work over these years.
C- This was a comprehensive project where we were able to choose the architect and the design.
D- There is a well-made space that has drinking water, electricity, bathrooms and ample parking.
E- It's a street-style skatepark, and in Guanacaste there are many skateparks, but they are bowl-style or pool-style.
F-It puts us on equal footing with all sports disciplines.
G- As a subcommittee, we now have a beautiful and suitable space to promote extreme sports, conduct workshops, practices, events, and the Guanacaste Skate Championship.
J- We hope that this project, the work and time invested will result in eliminating the bad image that many people have towards the sport and skaters.

Furthermore, these are spaces where the consumption of drugs, tobacco, and alcoholic beverages is completely prohibited.
