Costa Rica's National Junior Team is seeking funding to compete in the ISA Junior World Championships in Brazil.

The Costa Rican National Surf Team, junior category (under 18), is seeking funds to supplement the budget that will allow them to participate in the ISA World Junior Championship to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from November 24 to December 3.
In an interview with the Costa Rican Surfing Federation, we obtained statements to find out how the resources for the national teams are obtained and why it is necessary to carry out fundraising campaigns.
What financial support is ICODER and the Federation providing? What aspects do these amounts cover?
The Surf Federation plans a multi-year budget one year before it is implemented, so when planning is done, the dates, locations, and in some cases even the international events that will take place the following year are not confirmed. Therefore, planning is based on an assumption of what will happen due to the international competitions of previous years.
For the 2023 Junior World Cup, this year's budget includes funds to cover part of the expenses listed below:
- Registrations
- Feeding
- Lodging
- Policies
- Transport of boards
- International Transport
We know that the amounts are not enough to cover all the athletes' needs, but the Federation as such must allocate resources not only to the world championships. It has commitments such as mass participation, training, payment of legal services, payment of the communications officer, payment of the administrative assistant, execution of the National Circuit and competitions in other disciplines such as Stand Up Paddle, Bodyboard, Skimboard, other international commitments (World Open, Air Transport for Adaptive Surfing, World Stand Up Paddle Championship, international Bodyboard competition), payment of the coach, among many other obligations, so the aim is to maximize the resources provided.
How does the federation obtain the resources to finance the country's participation in the event?
For the time being, and since the end of the pandemic, financial resources have been very limited. Sponsorships have increased very gradually, so the funding for youth teams comes solely from the support provided by ICODER. As a Federation, our commitment and objective is to increase sponsorships and thereby support our athletes in the way they deserve.
Who are the members of the Costa Rican delegation attending the event, and what roles will each member play? How will the salaries of each member of this delegation be funded?
As previously stated, it will be financed with financial contributions from ICODER. The delegation is composed of:
Under 18 Category Men
Tomas Pathenay
Ethan Hollander
Romeo MarÃn Stone
Substitutes:
1-Fabian Rosales
Under 18 Category M
Erika Berra
Rachel Agüero
Tamaya Morphrey
Category SUB 16 H
Ethan Hollander
Tomas Pathenay
Romeo MarÃn Stone
Substitutes:
1-Leon Cerezo
Under 16 Category M
Erika Berra
Mikela Castro
Tamaya Morphrey
The selection was made based 100% on the CNS ranking since juniors do not have much opportunity to travel to compete in higher leagues.
The responsible delegation would consist of a female person in charge who is attentive to the minors, plus a male person in charge, plus the coach (Diego Naranjo) and a delegate from the Board of Directors and representative of the Total Delegation; these positions are still to be confirmed.
What aspects does the amount granted by ICODER and FEDESURF cover?
Does the amount fully or partially cover the basic requirements for the team? (lodging, food, transportation, tickets, etc.)
The amount, as explained in response #1, is based on a prior budget intended to fully cover the athletes' expenses. It's important to note that the Federation was unaware of the movement being organized by the parents in support of the World Championship.
The fundraising campaign is being conducted through a GoFundMe campaign and you can contribute at the following link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-the-costa-rican-junior-isa-surf-team?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&utm_medium=copy_link_all&utm_source=customer
