Limón Province celebrates its day in a big way.

Celebrating a decade of Black and Afro-Costa Rican Culture Day, the beautiful province of Limón, thanks to the Black Ethnic Civic Cultural Committee, commemorates the values and cultural elements of Afro-descendant culture.

The date of August 31 was chosen in reference to the First International Convention on the Situation of Black People, which concluded on August 31, at Madison Square Garden in New York on August 31, 1920, and as a result of the discussions at that convention, “The Declaration on the Rights of Black People” was promulgated.

Years later, another decree was signed expanding the celebration to include "Black People's Day and Afro-Costa Rican Culture." This led to Law 9526, declaring August the Historical Month of Afro-descendants in Costa Rica.

The activities that take place in the province are diverse and are celebrated with joy, enjoying a unique flavor of a culture full of countless riches.
