“El Malacrianza” triumphs in the Pro Junior event in Portugal.

Last week, national surfer Malakai Martínez triumphed in his first participation in the old continent; the Guanacaste native managed to win a date on the Junior Pro calendar.

Martínez won the Ribeira Grande Junior Pro, showing a great level in his surfing despite it being his second experience on the waves of Portugal.

The Costa Rican shared more about his experience in the old continent, and here is the interview.

Was this your first experience in Europe at a WSL event?

Malakai: Yes, it was my first experience with WSL dates in Europe, but I had already surfed on the island of the Azores in an ISA world championship.

What experience did this commitment leave you with, and how did you feel during the event?

Malakai: It means a lot to me, I had never won a WSL Junior Pro event before and succeeding in Europe is quite difficult and it motivates me for the upcoming events.

How was the competition and the wave quality?

Malakai: The competition was tough, there were surfers with a very high level, the waves were good from 2 to 5 feet and there was an excellent left for doing aerials.

Who are your current financial supporters?

Malakai: For the moment, my main financial backers are Volcom and Sharkys Tamarindo, in addition to my parents and family who pay for most of my trips. The financial aspect is the hardest part for me as a surfer and what has most hindered my career, so to speak.

What does Malakai Martinez need to be able to continue competing in WSL events?

Malakai: For next year, I plan to compete in several WQS events since I won't be a Junior anymore. What would help me most next year would be a bit more financial support so I can attend not only the upcoming events but also those where I think I could benefit the most.
