The Costa Rican Surfing Federation has released the list of national team members who will attend the 2024 ISA World Surfing Games, the important final qualifying stage for surfing at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The competition will take place in the municipality of Arecibo at the world-renowned Margara reefs, a heavy water wave, and the twin breaks of El Pico and Rastrial, both offering solid waves that mainly favor lefts.
The 2024 WSG will be the culmination of two years of Olympic qualification, with a total of fourteen (14) Olympic spots up for grabs. Puerto Rico will witness surfing history when the top five eligible men and the top seven eligible women claim their places.
The national team dynamics will be in full effect for the 2024 WSG, as the highest-ranked men's and women's national teams will each earn an additional spot for their nation.
According to the Costa Rican Surfing Federation, the selection criteria for the athletes was based on the performance demonstrated in the following events: WSL Championship Tour, WSL Challenger Series, WSL Qualifying Series, WSL Junior Pro, ALAS Pro Tour and National Surfing Circuit.
Based on that criterion, the national surfing team was formed as follows:
Breeze Hennessy
Leilani McGonagle
Coral Wiggins
Carlos Muñoz
Sam Reidy
Anthony Fillingim
The list is headed by WSL Championship Tour 2023 competitors Brisa Hennessy, who has already qualified for the Olympic Games via the world tour, and Carlos “Cali” Muñoz, who is ranked #51 in the Challenger Series.
In addition to Pan American medalist Leilani McGonagle, who is ranked #23 in the Challenger Series and #18 in the QS.
This is the first call-up for the National Surf Circuit champions, Sam Reidy (19 years old, local of Playa Dominical) who is currently the highest-ranked Costa Rican in the WSL QS regional ranking at #10 with 1733 points, and Coral Wiggins (22 years old, local of Playa Avellanas) who is in position #46 of the ALAS tour ranking with 1000 points.
One of the new additions is Anthony Fillingim, who returned to competitive surfing in 2023 and is currently ranked #34 in the WSL QS rankings with 880 points.
