A paradisiacal area of our country, with incredible beaches and very high quality waves, a region that directly or indirectly lives off tourism, that's how we could describe the Santa Teresa area.

A region located on the coast of the Nicoya peninsula, however, belongs to the province of Puntarenas.

This beautiful region of our country has taken the national emergency very cautiously and is complying with the measures provided by the Ministry of Health of Costa Rica.

In this article we talk to a surfer from the area, Esteban Chaves, and he tells us how the crisis has been experienced in Santa Teresa.

How have you seen the pandemic situation in Santa Teresa?

Thanks to Santa Teresa's distance from the epicenter of the outbreak, we initially took normal, less drastic measures. However, now there are stricter measures in place, many shops have closed, and beach access is prohibited. Tourism has been severely impacted, and consequently, so has the local economy, as the town relies on local residents, which is difficult because many use their savings for food.

In your case, how have you experienced the current situation?

In my case, I've been living off my savings and with the support of my family from afar, since I live alone in Santa Teresa. I live in the lifeguards' house, where I'm sponsored by a man named Tomás. All the lifeguards here are volunteers, and we've tried to maintain all the necessary health precautions.

Where have you been training during this time to try to maintain your physical fitness?

Here we have a private gym and we have been able to train and I have gone back to doing activities like skateboarding that I didn't do before because I trained more in the sea.

What do you think should be our reaction to the crisis?

I think we should look within ourselves and meditate, try to do things at home that make us happy so we can come back stronger, because if we listen and follow the protocols dictated by the authorities to the letter, we can get through this.

What positive message would you give to those people going through difficult times in our country?

We must understand that everything happens for a reason, and I encourage you because we will all get through this together by having faith in God.

Prudence in the face of a crisis is a source of peace and always helps us, leading us to fully comply with the guidelines of health authorities. Fear, on the other hand, paralyzes, diminishes, and contributes nothing positive.
