Cancellation and rescheduling of WSL events will financially affect athletes

COVID-19 will affect the competitive pace and the economic aspect of surfers around the world.
Like many citizens in their various jobs, surfers could be affected by the cancellation and rescheduling of events that would generate an economic income for their bank accounts.
A halt to QS competitions worldwide consequently impacts the competitive level of surfers who, without being able to compete, see their CT dream becoming increasingly distant.
This topic requires much analysis, and in 2020, with its new distribution of points in QS stops, the outlook for an athlete fighting to enter the World Tour becomes more complicated, which we will explain based on the following example:
A surfer who competes in a 1,000-point qualifying event and advances through important rounds has a margin of economic gain that could help the athlete in the future and even open the possibility of continuing to compete in events with a higher point value. Due to the current situation of the events, the athlete will no longer have that possibility and will have to wait to see what measures will be taken.
On CT dates, surfers already receive financial compensation for each canceled stop. This is specified in the World Surf League (WSL) rulebook, which states that for each canceled date, the surfer will receive the financial prize as if it were a last-place finish.
In our country, many athletes were competing in events of this nature in 2020, and had there not been a cancellation or rescheduling of the QS stops, they would have received more money and the pace of competition would have increased, creating a better outlook for this year and for 2021.
