15 preventative measures to avoid forest fires this summer

San Marcos University presents the news of the day.

Let's work together to protect our country from forest fires.

Forest fires are a natural disaster. Sometimes they occur due to the excessive heat we are currently experiencing, but other times they are caused by human negligence.

Today we are experiencing a fire that has devastated a large number of hectares in Australia, where approximately 500 million animals have lost their lives.

Many families have lost their homes and more than 20 people have lost their lives, not to mention the infertility of the land that the affected areas will be left with.

A similar situation occurred the previous year in Brazil, where the damage was catastrophic and irreversible.
Taking this data into account and to avoid damage to our territory, here are 15 prevention tips to reduce disasters this summer.

  • Do not leave glass bottles on the grass, where they can start a fire due to the heat.
  • Do not throw lit matches or cigarettes on the road, and especially not in the middle of the forest.
  • Do not throw away trash; bottles or glass can start a fire by creating a magnifying effect with the sun's rays.
  • Do not make campfires; no matter how many precautions you take, a single flame can cause a large fire.
  • Do not park cars on the side of the road where there is dry grass.

  • Do not leave anything flammable after camping.
  • Do not light a fire in the mountains if conditions are unfavorable.
  • Store flammable liquids in protected areas.
  • Do not accumulate garbage on the premises.
  • Do not light fires on the land.

  • Do not leave matches within reach of children.
  • Put out the fire immediately. If you see a campfire or the beginning of a fire, surround it with green branches or throw water or dirt on it.
  • Call for help immediately if the fire gets out of control, get to safety, and notify the authorities as soon as possible.
  • Protect your life; when fleeing the fire, do not go uphill, look for flat areas and walk against the wind.
  • In agricultural practices, if you use fire to clear land for planting, make a firebreak to prevent it from spreading.
